What is NIN?

The National Identification Number (NIN) is a set of numbers assigned to an individual upon successful enrolment. Enrolment consists of the recording of an individual’s demographic data and capture of the ten (10) fingerprints, head-to-shoulder facial picture and digital signature, which are all used to cross-check existing data in the National Identity Database to confirm that there is no previous entry of the same data.

The Federal Government of Nigeria in collaboration with the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) announced that the linking of NIN to SIM cards is compulsory for every one that will use GSM line in Nigerian. Therefore, every individual is expected to link their NIN to each of their SIM cards. It doesn’t matter how many SIM cards/phone numbers you have.

The Nigerian Communication Commission has mandated all GSM Network providers in Nigeria to ensure all mobile number are linked with NIN to allow the number to be in use. That any mobile number that do not link their NIN to their SIM cards will not be able make phone calls with the line. The mandatory NIN requirement to keep mobile line started on December 31, 2020.

How to Link your NIN to MTN network

For MTN network users, below are easy steps to link your MTN line with National Identification Number (NIN):

  1. Copy out your 11-digit NIN number
  2. Click on the call app on your mobile phone
  3. Dial *785*Your 11-digit NIN number#
  4. For example; *785*64812640614#
  5. After dialling the USSD code your NIN will be linked to MTN SIM card automatically.
  6. Alternatively, you can download the My MTN app from https://mtnonline.com/nin/ and submit your details to link your NIN.

How to Check Your NIN Using an MTN SIM Card

If you have misplaced your NIN or you can’t recall the 11-digits anymore, then need to apply for retrieval of your NIN. Luckily for you, that can be done easily using your mobile phone. Let’s take a look at how you can retrieve your NIN number using an MTN SIM card.

  1. Go to the call app on your mobile phone
  2. Dial_*346#
  3. After dialing the code, several options will be displayed on your screen
  4. Select “NIN retrieval” from the displayed options by typing 1
  5. Note that this service will cost you N20 only, which will be deducted from your mobile phone network.

How to Link Your NIN to AIRTEL

To link your NIN number to your Airtel SIM card, follow the procedures below:

  1. Copy out your 11-digit NIN number
  2. Click on the call app on your mobile phone
  3. Dial *121*1# using your Airtel line
  4. After dialing the USSD code your NIN will be linked to Airtel SIM card automatically.

 

How to check your NIN using an AIRTEL Sim Card

Airtel users who wish to retrieve their NIN can use the following procedures to acquire it:

  1. Go to the call app on your mobile phone
  2. Dial *346#
  3. After dialing the code, several options will be displayed on your screen
  4. Select “NIN retrieval” from the displayed options by typing 1
  5. Note that this service will cost you N20 only, which will be deducted from your mobile phone network.

 

How to Link Your NIN to GLO Sim Card

If you’re a Glo user and you wish to link your NIN to your phone number, then follow the procedures below:

  1. Copy out your 11-digit NIN number
  2. Open the messaging app on your mobile phone
  3. Send the message “UPDATENIN, your 11-digit NIN number, first name, and Last name” For example send; “UPDATENIN 64812640614 John Bassey”
  4. Send the message to 109
  5. After sending the message your NIN will be linked to GLO line automatically.

OR

  1. Dial *109* your 11-digit NIN number# using your mobile phone. For example, “109*64812640614#
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to enter and submit your details
  3. After entering your details, tap on send
  4. Your NIN will be linked to your Glo SIM card.
  5. Alternatively, you can visit the website. https://mobileapp.gloworld.com/glonin/home to link your NIN to your Glo number.

How to check your NIN using a GLO Sim Card

If you have misplaced your NIN or you can’t recall the 11-digits anymore, then you can retrieve it using your Glo SIM card. To check your NIN using a Glo SIM, follow the procedures below:

  1. Go to the call app on your mobile phone
  2. Dial *346#
  3. After dialing the code, several options will be displayed on your screen
  4. Select “NIN retrieval” from the displayed options by typing 1
  5. Note that this service will cost you N20 only, which will be deducted from your mobile phone network.

How to Link Your NIN to 9MOBILE

Are you a 9mobile user and you wish to link your NIN to your SIM card? Then follow the procedures below:

  1. Open the call app on your mobile phone
  2. Dial the code *2008*# using your 9mobile SIM card
  3. You will receive a message indicating that your NIN has been successfully linked to your 9mobile SIM card
  4. Alternatively, you can visit https://9mobile.com.ng/NIN and provide your details to link your SIM card to your NIN.

How to check your NIN using a 9MOBILE Sim Card

9mobile users can use the steps below to retrieve or check their 12-digit NIN number.

  1. Go to the call app on your mobile phone
  2. Dial *346#
  3. Select “NIN Retrieval” from the options displayed on your screen.
  4. Tap on “1” to select it
