Nigerian passports are issued to Nigerian citizens to travel outside of Nigeria. Nigeria now offers only electronic passports for new passport applications. These electronic passports, known also as the e-passport, are classified as either “Standard” or “Official”, depending on intended use.
The OFFICIAL e-passport is primarily reserved for certain classes of government officials and Nigerian diplomats. While the STANDARD e-passport is for general Nigerian citizens.
Nigerian citizens can travel to member states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) with the Nigerian e-passports.
How to Apply Nigerian International Passport
Nigerian passports can be applied for either at the physical location of the Nigeria Immigration Services across every state in Nigeria, or by making submission through its website. Nigerians living in other countries may obtain passports through the nearest Nigerian embassy or consulate. Renewing an already existing passport must be done in person.
You will locate the Nigeria Immigration Service office in every federal secretariate building in every state, mostly the capital city of every state in Nigeria.
The Nigeria Immigration Service is a government agency of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, responsible for the issuance of Nigerian International Passport, the country’s border security and migration management. It was established by the Act of Parliament in 1963.
Check Nigerian ePassport Status
When your international e-Passport application has been submitted, the application is to wait for the ePassport to be process by the Nigeria Immigration Service. This could take weeks.
But the Nigeria Immigration Service has a window for the International Passport applicant to check the status of their passport application online.

Fill the form and select a passport processing centre
Choose a payment option and make a payment
Book an appointment for biometric enrolment
Proceed for interview and enrolment on your scheduled date
Wait for Passport pick-up notification (via SMS)
New Passport Application Requirements
National Identity Number (NIN)
LGA identification certificate of the applicant
Passport photograph – soft copy (white background with eyes on the camera and the two ears showing clearly)
Age declaration or birth certificate
Consent letter from both parents for Minors
Parents passport data page and NIN slip are for Minors
Statutory ePassport Fees
- Thirty-two (32) page passport booklet with five-year validity is N50,000 only
- Sixty-four (64) page passport booklet with 10-year validity N100,000 only.
These fees only apply to Nigerians residing in Nigeria, and not to Nigerians in the Diaspora. The cost for Nigerians in the Diaspora can be find on their respective country’s embassy or consulate.
