Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN)

This Radio station known as Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) was founded in 1933 by the British colonial government. Named the Radio Diffusion Service (RDS), it allowed the public to hear the British
Broadcasting Corporation’s foreign radio service broadcasts in certain public locations over loudspeakers.

In April 1950, the ”’Radio Station”’ became the Nigerian Broadcasting Service and introduced radio stations in Lagos, Kaduna, Enugu, Ibadan, and Kano. This service was reorganized into the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) on April 1, 1957, by act of parliament. Its mission was to “provide public service”.

Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria Functions

FRCN ensures the maintenance of high standards and promotes the efficient operation of the entire federal radio broadcasting system in accordance with National policy     

FRCN organizes, provide and subsidise, for the purpose of broadcasting, educational activities and public entertainment.

The owned Nigerian Federal Government Radio enters into an agreement with  Federal Government or State or even any other public   body for the purpose of obtaining licences, rights, privileges and concessions.

Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria Duties

FRCN provides public services to the interest of the society, independent and impartial radio broadcasting services for general reception within Nigeria and outside Nigeria.

FRCN, will ensure that the services they provides, when looked into as a whole, shall reflect the unity of Nigeria as a Federation and at the same time gives adequate expression to the culture, characteristics and affairs of the country.
