Nigeria Railway Corporation has its roots years back in the 1898, the British colonial government constructed the first railroad on October 3rd 1912. Lagos Government Railway and the Baro-Kano Railway were merged together.

Operating a railway station nationwide, under the name Government Department of Railways, with the passing of the Nigerian Railway Corporation Act of 1955, the company gained its current name as well as the exclusive legal right to construct and operate railway service in Nigeria. The rail network reached its maximum extent shortly after Nigerian got her independence.
