REGIONS OF SENEGAL

This post discusses the regions of Senegal, it also list and explain this division according to the highest administrative structure.

The African country Senegal is divided into fourteen regions as the highest administrative structure. These regions are managed by the regional council, which is elected by general election. These regions are divided into 45 departments, 103 arrondissements (neither of which have administrative function) and by collectivités locales (the 14 regions, 110 communes, and 320 communautés rurales) which elect administrative officers. Three of these regions were created on 10 September 2008, when Kaffrine Region was split from Kaolack, Kédougou region was split from Tambacounda, and Sédhiou region was split from Kolda.

FOURTEEN REGIONS OF SENEGAL

These regions are:  Dakar, Ziguinchor, Diourbel, Saint-Louis, Tambacounda, Kaolack, Thiès, Louga, Fatick, Kolda, Matam, Kaffrine, Kédougou and Sédhiou.

DAKAR

Dakar Region is one of the fourteen regions of Senegal. Dakar is Senegal’s smallest and most populated area. Dakar Region is divided into four departments. According to the 2013 census of the region, there are 2,956,023 inhabitants. The population density of the area having a surface area of 547 square kilometers is 5,400/square kilometers. The region has the capital city of the country and the westernmost point of the African continent is located in this region.

ZIGUINCHOR

Ziguinchor Region is one of the fourteen regions of Senegal. Ziguinchor Region is divided into three departments. The region has a population of 523,840 according to the 2013 census. The region with a surface area of 7,352 square kilometers has a population density of 71/square kilometers.

DIOURBEL

Diourbel Region is one of the fourteen regions of Senegal. Diourbel Region is divided into three departments. According to the 2013 census of the region there are 1,497,455 inhabitants. The population density of the region with a surface area of 4,824 square kilometers is 290/square kilometers.

SAINT-LOUIS

Saint-Louis Region is one of the fourteen regions of Senegal. Saint-Louis Region is divided into three departments. The region has a population of 908,942 according to the 2013 census. The population density of the region with a surface area of 19,241 square kilometers is 45/square kilometers.

TAMBACOUNDA

Tambacounda Region is one of the fourteen regions of Senegal. Tambacounda Region is divided into four departments. The region has a population of 681,310 according to the 2013 census. The population density of the region with a surface area of 42,364 square kilometers is 15/square kilometers.

KAOLACK

Kaolack Region is one of the fourteen regions of Senegal. Kaolack Region is divided into three departments. According to the 2013 census of the region, there are 960,875 inhabitants. The population density of the region with a surface area of 5,357 square kilometers is 170/square kilometers.

THIÈS

Thiès Region is one of the fourteen regions of Senegal. Thiès Region is divided into three departments. The region has a population of 1,788,864 according to the 2013 census. The population density of the region having a surface area of 6,670 square kilometers is 260/square kilometers.

LOUGA

Louga Region is one of the fourteen regions of Senegal. Louga Region is divided into three departments. The region has a population of 874,193 according to the 2013 census. The population density of the region with a surface area of 24,889 square kilometers is 34/square kilometers.

FATICK

Fatick Region is one of the fourteen Senegal’s regions. Fatick Region is divided into three departments. According to the 2013 census of the region, there are 835,352 inhabitants. The population density of the region having a surface area of 6,849 square kilometers is 100/square kilometer.

KOLDA

Kolda Region is one of the fourteen regions of Senegal. Kolda Region is divided into three departments. The region has a population of 714,392 according to the 2013 census. The population density of the region with a surface area of 13,771 square kilometers is 46/square kilometers.

MATAM

Matam Region is one of the fourteen regions of Senegal. Matam Region is divided into three departments. According to the 2013 census of the region, there are 562,539 inhabitants. The population density of the region with an area of 29,445 square kilometers is 18/square kilometers.

KAFFRINE

Kaffrine Region is one of the fourteen regions of Senegal. Kaffrine Region is divided into four departments. The region has a population of 566,992 according to the 2013 census. The population density of the region with a surface area of 11,262 square kilometers is 48/square kilometers.

KÉDOUGOU

Kédougou Region is one of the fourteen regions of Senegal. Kédougou Region is divided into three departments. The region has a population of 152,357 according to the 2013 census. The population density of the region having a surface area of 16,800 square kilometers is 9/square km.

SÉDHIOU

Sédhiou Region is one of the fourteen regions of Senegal. Sédhiou Region is divided into three departments. The region has a population of 452,944 according to the 2013 census. The population density of the region, which has a surface area of 7,341 square kilometers, is 62 / square kilometers.
