A report from The Shift Project estimates that the carbon footprint of gadgets accounts for 3.7% of global greenhouse emissions, which is more than the amount produced by the aviation industry.

This accounts for roughly 3-4% of per capita anthropogenic GHG emissions (around 6.0-7.6 tonnes CO2-eq year−1 in 2019).

The environmental impact can vary substantially depending on the carbon intensity of the electricity used to power devices, ranging from 146 kg CO2-eq year−1 in Norway (hydropower-based electricity mix) to 327 kg CO2-eq year−1 in India (fossil fuel-based electricity mix).
